  1. Metacity Compositor

  4. Since version 2.22 Metacity includes a simple compositor. It's only
  5. intended to add a set of non-customisable simple effects. Currently
  6. these include a drop-shadow around windows, and thumbnail previews in
  7. the window switcher dialog.

  9. Contrary to Compiz, the Metacity compositor uses the XRender extension
  10. to draw to the screen. This means that no 3D acceleration is
  11. needed. This should in theory make it suitable to run on a larger selection of
  12. hardware, but only if your video driver implements sufficient Render
  13. performance.

  15. The compositor can be enabled on the fly by setting the gconf key
  16. /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager to true by using
  17. gconf-editor or gconftool-2.

  19. Before enabling the compositor, you need to make sure your X server
  20. configuration has the composite extension loaded and enabled.
